Abstract
BACKGROUND: For safe blood transfusion, it is important that blood management in hospitals be appropriately performed. Thus, small- and medium-sized hospitals should be given the suitable environment capable of undergoing continuous education to avoid the difficulty of carrying out the appropriate blood management. In this connection, we conducted professional education seminars for the blood management staff at small- and medium-sized hospitals and tried to provide the proper direction of their education program. A survey was conducted to gather data from the staff concerned.

METHODOLOGY/RESULTS: We conducted two education programs depending on the issued annual amount of blood product in small- and medium-sized hospitals. In hospitals which used 1,000¡4,999 units of blood products in 2014, eight education seminars were held every Saturday morning in four weeks. The total number of participants was 229, from 76.6% (177/231) of target hospitals. For hospitals which used 24¡999 units of blood, four education seminars were held every Saturday afternoon in four weeks. The total number of participants was 327 from 16.9% (244/1447) of target hospitals. The education program was made up of lectures and an instructional video on hospital blood management, including blood typing and cross-matching tests. We administered the questionnaire to the education seminar participants. Most of the respondents said that the education seminar was very helpful and hoped that it would be offered continuously.

CONCLUSION: The seminars provided educational opportunities to small- and medium-sized hospitals. This re-emphasized the importance of blood management in hospitals. In order to provide up-to-date information, we will review and revise the educational content. Also, we will improve the education program through continuous surveys. Further, we will seek ways to increase the education participation rates. We hope that this continuing education will support the blood management staff of small-and medium-sized hospitals.
